Over a 30-year period, Vaughn Gillson has practiced traditional oil painting and drawing technique and prepares materials by hand in the manner of 17th and 18th century artists. Her painting subjects, which have been described as haunting and poetic, include figure work, still life and landscape. For several years she painted commissioned portraits. Her work resides in collections in Canada and the United States.

Vaughn moved to Toronto from Montreal, where she had attended the National Theatre School’s Design Program and later worked as head of the Wardrobe Department at Centaur Theatre. Seeking a more personal form of artistic involvement than the collaborative nature of theatre allowed, she enrolled in classes in painting, design and sculpture. A few years later, during an interval at the Art Students League in New York, her focus turned toward classical painting technique. She continued in this direction at the studio of John Michael Angel on returning to Toronto.

Throughout her career, Vaughn has worked hard to advance her interest and knowledge of art elements, principles and their application in painting. She began to teach and give workshops in the Greater Toronto Area and from her studio. In 2000 she began to plan a series of teachers' guides for art education. The resulting program, Visual Language, is a structured network of lessons with an academic approach to teaching art concepts for grades 2 - 8 that is written for those who may be unfamiliar with the subject.

Vaughn continues to paint at her studio in Toronto, Canada.
